IFSCC 2026: Botanical Extraction Questions for Skincare Buyers

BASF's IFSCC 2026 botanical extraction research raises practical questions about ingredient identity, formulation testing and private label skincare claims.

On 28 September 2026, BASF announced research for the IFSCC Congress in Perth, held from 28 September to 1 October. Its announcement described botanical extraction using plant-derived solvents, including coconut water, alongside separate work on peptides and biopolymers. BASF reported changes in the composition of selected plant extracts and findings related to skin barrier properties. These are supplier-reported research findings; the announcement does not establish the performance of a finished Lanthome skincare product.

For private label skincare buyers, the useful question is how an extraction process can be documented, evaluated and translated into a product brief. The following recommendations are our procurement analysis of that question, rather than additional findings from the research.

Why the extraction process belongs in your ingredient brief

A botanical name is a starting point for sourcing. Ask the supplier to connect that name to the plant part, extraction process, carrier, specification and intended use level. Two ingredients described with the same plant name may require different handling in a formula. Your purchase brief should make those differences visible before the formulation team begins sample work.

A process described as natural or innovative should also prompt a request for a precise explanation. Record what the description covers, which supporting documents are available and which statements remain unverified. Keep the material specification separate from any broader environmental claim about the final product and its packaging.

Five questions to send before approving a sample

  1. What exactly is the supplied material? Request its ingredient identity, plant part, carrier system and current specification. Ask how the extraction method is described in the technical documents and which version will be supplied.
  2. What does the evidence actually measure? Separate composition measurements, laboratory observations and finished-product studies. Request the study design, tested material, concentration and relevant comparison. A headline about an extract should not become a claim for a cream without appropriate support.
  3. How will it be evaluated in our formula? Ask the development team to propose compatibility, stability and microbiological checks for the intended product. Set acceptance criteria before choosing between samples so the most attractive story does not automatically win.
  4. What can our target market label say? Share the destination, product category and proposed wording with the responsible regulatory reviewer. Request a documented claim review for the actual formula. Avoid writing treatment, regeneration or disease-related promises from a research headline.
  5. How will repeat supply be controlled? Record the approved ingredient and formula versions, batch documents and change-notification process. Confirm availability, quotation, minimum order quantity and timing for the specific project before making launch commitments.

Turn a research story into a manageable development comparison

A useful next step is a short comparison brief with one product format, one target market and a clearly stated buyer objective. Include the existing reference sample, the proposed ingredient option, the documents still needed and the tests required before approval. Assign a person to each open question and agree when the team will review the results.

For example, a moisturizer project could compare candidate samples for the intended texture, packaging compatibility and approved claim direction. The brief should identify which evidence comes from an ingredient supplier and which evidence must be generated for the chosen finished formula. This keeps a promising research direction from becoming an unsupported launch promise.

What this means for a Lanthome sourcing discussion

Lanthome Skincare's website presents product sourcing, private label packaging coordination and OEM/ODM project evaluation for overseas buyers. Browse the current product collections to identify a starting format, then send your project brief with the target country, sales channel, desired product type and evidence questions.

Ingredient availability, production entity, documents, specifications, MOQ and lead time require confirmation for the individual project. This article reports an external research announcement and offers a sourcing framework; it does not announce a BASF partnership or the use of its research ingredients in Lanthome products.
